I Loved a Soldier is an unfinished 1936 Paramount Pictures film starring Marlene Dietrich and Charles Boyer, and directed by Henry Hathaway.[1]
The film was intended as a remake of the 1927 Pola Negri vehicle Hotel Imperial (based on a play by Melchior Lengyell). The scenario for the remake was written by John van Druten, with additional dialogue by Grover Jones.
As a result of problems with the script and on-set altercations between Dietrich and Hathaway, producer Ernst Lubitsch suspended production on the film several weeks into shooting.
Recast with Isa Miranda and Ray Milland, the film was completed in 1939 under the title Hotel Imperial. No footage shot for I Loved a Soldier was used in the final film, Hotel Imperial.
In 1943, Billy Wilder made a remake, Five Graves to Cairo, starring Anne Baxter and Franchot Tone.
No footage of I Loved a Soldier is known to have survived.
